Mrzyk & Moriceau: The Man With The Golden Gun
January 7 – February 19, 2011
Ratio 3, 1447 Stevenson Street, San Francisco, CA 94103 USA
Opening reception: January 7, 2011, 6-8pm.
Ratio 3 is pleased to present The Man With The Golden Gun, new work by Petra Mrzyk and Jean-Françios Moriceau on view from January 7th to February 19, 2011.
For their first solo exhibition in San Francisco, Mrzyk & Moriceau will create an entirely immersive installation that includes drawings, wall paintings, video animation, and masks. Known for their detailed black-and-white ink drawings, their work teeters on the absurd, humorous, and perverse. With an ironic nod to commercial illustration, comics, and graphic design, they pluck imagery from contemporary visual culture. In their work, anything becomes possible. Animals take on human traits; inanimate objects disturbingly come to life; and the surreal is the norm.
Large portraits on the wall will playfully dominate the gallery, while framed drawings are scattered throughout the exhibition space. Their music video for Sebastien Tellier’s ‘Look’ aptly demonstrates their skill for combining the sensual and seductive. Mrzyk & Moriceau will also debut a new body of work; masks cut from a thick black plastic. The masks appear playful yet hint at a darker mood, and become accoutrements for “a very special party.”
Petra Mrzyk (b. 1973) and Jean-François Moriceau (b. 1974) have been working collaboratively since 1998. They have had solo exhibitions at Air de Paris, Paris (2008, 2004), Caixa Forum, Barcelona (2008), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2006), Mamco, Geneva (2004), and Schnitt Ausstellungsraum, Cologne (2001), and have a wall painting on permanent display at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. They have exhibited their work internationally in group exhibitions, and have produced music videos for Air, Katerine, and others. The artists live and work in Châtillon-sur-Indre, France.
