Ara Peterson: The Wedge
May 27 - July 3, 2005
Ratio 3, 903 Guerrero, San Francisco, CA 94110

Opening reception: May 27, 2005, 6-8pm.

Ratio 3 is pleased to present The Wedge , new work by Ara Peterson, on view from May 27 to July 3, 2005.

Ara Peterson will debut new abstract sculpture and video based on synthesized wave formations. Using his oscillating video animation as the source material to generate the sculptures, Peterson explores cross sections of compressed material and what becomes visible when an object is sliced into parts. The black-and-white stacked tower-like structures seem to vibrate and swell in space. Combined with an optically hyperactive video projection, Peterson's work pulsates with a confounding and shocking tension.

Ara Peterson was born in 1973 in Boston, MA. He graduated with a degree in Film/Video/Animation from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1997. Peterson was one of the founding members of the seminal collective Forcefield, who were included in the 2002 Biennial Exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. His work has been included in exhibitions at Greene Naftali Gallery, New York (2003), The Mattress Factory (2003), Biennale d'arte contemporian De Lyon, France (2003), P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center/The Museum of Modern Art, Long Island City (2004), the Liverpool Biennial, UK (2004), and The Moore Space, Miami (2004). In 2005 he will exhibit at Deitch Projects, New York, John Connelly Presents, New York, and Greene Naftali Gallery, New York. Peterson currently lives and works in Providence, RI.
