Mitzi Pederson: Ciphers
April 27th - June 16th, 2012
Opening Reception: Friday, April 27th, 6-8pm
Ratio 3 is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Mitzi Pederson. Pederson's sculptural and installation-based work examines disparate materials, their forms and the spaces they occupy through minimal and perceptive presentations. For this exhibit, Pederson blurs the boundaries between sculpture and painting by using a specific fabric, tulle, as the surface for paint, sand, glitter, and wood. This material is used in different ways: stretched as canvas, hung directly on the wall, and as support for added media.
These new wall works draw out the inherent qualities of the materials and create a minimally perceptive visual experience in the gallery setting. In some cases, the lightness, weightlessness and soft presence of the fabric nearly disappears from view while calling attention to its versatility and strength. With other pieces, the material cast shadows on the wall in a moiré effect that creates a ground which suspends the static drawing on the surface.
Pederson continues her interest in playing with perception of presence; the line between something and nothing. Her selection and manipulation of materials compose both a spontaneous and deeply contemplative gesture. There is a tension found within the resourceful use of such elemental components. These new works continue her ongoing interaction with gravity and the architecture of the gallery. Pederson's deep conviction in the forms and confidence in these elements emphasize simplicity over spectacle resulting in a seamless and graceful navigation of her discerning practice.
Mitzi Pederson was born in 1976 in Stuart, Florida. She received a B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1999.
